Structural Mechanics: Loads, Analysis, Materials and Design of Structural Elements 7E
Pages: 456,
Specialty: Mechanical Engineering,
Publisher: Pearson,
Publication Year: 2010,
Cover: Paperback,
Dimensions: 188x244x26mm
Structural Mechanics, first published in 1958, has become established as a classic text on the theory of structures and design methods of structural members. The book clearly and logically presents the subject's basic principles, keeping the mathematical content to its essential minimum. The seventh edition has been revised to provide up-to-date design guidance, principles in line with the current British Standards and Eurocodes. The original simplicity of the mathematical treatment has been maintained, while more emphasis on the relevance of structural mechanics to the process of structural design, analysis, materials, loads on building and structures according to the current British Standard and European Code of Practice. The initial chapters of the book deal with the concept of loads and their effects on structural materials and elements in terms of stress and strain. The significance of the shape of the cross-section of structural elements is then considered before the book finishes with the design of simple structural elements such as beams, columns, rafters, portal frames, dome frames and gravity retaining walls.

UNRAVEL the mystery of STRING THEORY Trying to understand string theory but ending up with your brain in knots? Here's your lifeline! This straightforward guide explains the fundamental principles behind this cutting-edge concept. String Theory Demystified elucidates the goal of the theory--to combine general relativity and quantum theory into a single, unified framework. You'll learn about classical strings, conformal field theory, quantization, compactification, and T duality. The book covers supersymmetry and superstrings, D-branes, the holographic principle, and cosmology. Hundreds of examples and illustrations make it easy to understand the material, and end-of-chapter quizzes and a final exam help reinforce learning. This fast and easy guide offers: Numerous figures to illustrate key concepts Sample problems with worked solutions Coverage of equations of motion, the energy-momentum tensor, and conserved currents A discussion of the Randall-Sundrum model A time-saving approach to performing better on an exam or at work Simple enough for a beginner, but challenging enough for an advanced student, String Theory Demystified is your key to comprehending this theory of everything.show more

For courses in introductory combined Statics and Mechanics of Materials courses found in ME, CE, AE, and Engineering Mechanics departments. Statics and Mechanics of Materials represents a combined abridged version of two of the author's books, namely Engineering Mechanics: Statics, Fourteenth Edition and Mechanics of Materials, Tenth Edition with Statics and Mechanics of Materials represents a combined abridged version of two of the author's books, namely Engineering Mechanics: Statics, Fourteenth Edition in SI Units and Mechanics of Materials, Tenth Edition in SI Units. It provides a clear and thorough presentation of both the theory and application of the important fundamental topics of these subjects that are often used in many engineering disciplines. The development emphasizes the importance of satisfying equilibrium, compatibility of deformation, and material behavior requirements. The hallmark of the book, however, remains the same as the author's unabridged versions, and that is, strong emphasis is placed on drawing a free-body diagram, and the importance of selecting an appropriate coordinate system and an associated sign convention whenever the equations of mechanics are applied. Throughout the book, many analysis and design applications are presented, which involve mechanical elements and structural members often encountered in engineering practice. Also Available with Pearson Mastering Engineering (TM).. Pearson Mastering Engineering is an online homework, tutorial, and assessment program designed to work with this text to engage students and improve results. Interactive, self-paced tutorials provide individualized coaching to help students stay on track. With a wide range of activities available, students can actively learn, understand, and retain even the most difficult concepts. The text and MasteringEngineering work together to guide students through engineering concepts with a multi-step approach to problems. show more

It is with great pleasure that I offer my reflections on Professor Anthony N. Michel's retirement from the University of Notre Dame. I have known Tony since 1984 when he joined the University of Notre Dame's faculty as Chair of the Depart- ment of Electrical Engineering. Tony has had a long and outstanding career. As a researcher, he has made im- portant contributions in several areas of systems theory and control theory, espe- cially stability analysis of large-scale dynamical systems. The numerous awards he received from the professional societies, particularly the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), are a testament to his accomplishments in research. He received the IEEE Control Systems Society's Best Transactions Paper Award (1978), and the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society's Guillemin-Cauer Prize Paper Award (1984) and Myril B. Reed Outstanding Paper Award (1993), among others. In addition, he was a Fulbright Scholar (1992) and received the Alexander von Hum- boldt Forschungspreis (Alexander von Humboldt Research Award for Senior U.S. Scientists) from the German government (1997).To date, he has written eight books and published over 150 archival journal papers. Tony is also an effective administrator who inspires high academic standards.show more
