    Publisher: Wiley,
    Publication Year: 2009,
    Cover: Paperback,
    Dimensions: 176x250x14mm

The volume provides an overview of the current status of exocytosis and to define future goals. Exocytosis, a universal process of eukaryotic cells, consisting of the fusion between the vesicle and the plasma membrane is an important topic in cell biology, physiology, biophysics, biochemistry and many other disciplines. The understanding of this rather complex process is essential for the understanding of normal function of unicellular and multicellular organisms from animal to plant kingdoms and in pathological conditions as well. During the last three decades a rapid increase in the number of research papers addressing this topic have been published. The development of our understanding of exocytosis spans the initial evidences that "something is being released" from cells to the description of extensive physiological, biophysical, molecular and genetic properties of the process. A list of key proteins involved in exocytosis in a number of cell types has been identified, but work is still being done to come to a consensus about a mechanism or mechanisms that describe the interplay of key players in functional terms. 3. Molecular and Cellular Biology of Viruses

Molecular and Cellular Biology of Viruses

    Pages: 504,
    Specialty: Biology,
    Publisher: Taylor & Francis,
    Publication Year: 2019,
    Cover: Paperback,
    Dimensions: 216x279mm

Viruses interact with host cells in ways that uniquely reveal a great deal about general aspects of molecular and cellular structure and function. Molecular and Cellular Biology of Viruses leads students on an exploration of viruses by supporting engaging and interactive learning. All the major classes of viruses are covered, with separate chapters for their replication and expression strategies, and chapters for mechanisms such as attachment that are independent of the virus genome type. Specific cases drawn from primary literature foster student engagement. End-of-chapter questions focus on analysis and interpretation with answers being given on the website (half for students, all for instructors). Examples come from the most-studied and medically important viruses such as HIV, influenza, and poliovirus. Plant viruses and bacteriophages are also included. There are chapters on the overall effect of viral infection on the host cell. Coverage of the immune system is focused on the interplay between host defenses and viruses, with a separate chapter on medical applications such as anti-viral drugs and vaccine development. The final chapter is on virus diversity and evolution, incorporating contemporary insights from metagenomic research. Key selling feature: Readable but rigorous coverage of the molecular and cellular biology of viruses Molecular mechanisms of all major groups, including plant viruses and bacteriophages, illustrated by example Host-pathogen interactions at the cellular and molecular level emphasized throughout Medical implications and consequences included Quality illustrations available to instructors Extensive questions and answers for each chapter show more

  9. Principles of Molecular Biology

    Principles of Molecular Biology

    Pages: 752,
    Specialty: Biology,
    Publisher: Jones & Bartlett,
    Publication Year: 2014,
    Cover: Paperback,
    Dimensions: 213.36x271.78x27.94mm

Includes access to the Student Companion Website with every print copy of the text. Written for the more concise course, Principles of Molecular Biology is modeled after Burton Tropp's successful Molecular Biology: Genes to Proteins and is appropriate for the sophomore level course. The author begins with an introduction to molecular biology, discussing what it is and how it relates to applications in "real life" with examples pulled from medicine and industry. An overview of protein structure and function follows, and from there the text covers the various roles of technology in elucidating the central concepts of molecular biology, from both a historical and contemporary perspective. Tropp then delves into the heart of the book with chapters focused on chromosomes, genetics, replication, DNA damage and repair, recombination, transposition, transcription, and wraps up with translation. Key Features: - Presents molecular biology from a biochemical perspective, utilizing model systems, as they best describe the processes being discussed -Special Topic boxes throughout focus on applications in medicine and technology -Presents "real world" applications of molecular biology that are necessary for students continuing on to medical school or the biotech industry -An end-of-chapter study guide includes questions for review and discussion -Difficult or complicated concepts are called-out in boxes to further explain and simplify
